The CASP is a specialist certification focused on the comprehensive operational and clinical skills needed to excel in the specialty pharmacy environment. While the BCSP also denotes expertise, the CASP has a unique focus on the practical aspects of patient access, REMS programs, and accreditation.
The exam covers principles of specialty disease management using examples from major therapeutic areas, including oncology, inflammatory conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), multiple sclerosis, and hepatitis C.
To maintain your certification, you must complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, with at least 30 hours focused on specialty disease states and operations, along with submitting a renewal fee.
Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) are FDA-required programs for certain high-risk drugs. Managing the specific requirements of these programs (e.g., patient monitoring, dispensing prerequisites) is a core competency for a CASP.
