Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the Certified Behavioral Health Pharmacist (CBHP)?

The CBHP certification is broad, covering the full spectrum of mental health conditions. The CPSUD is a deep specialization focused exclusively on the pharmacology and clinical management of substance use disorders and addiction.

Does this certification allow me to prescribe buprenorphine?

No. The authority to prescribe is determined by federal and state law (e.g., DATA waiver requirements). This certification validates your clinical expertise in *managing* these therapies as part of a healthcare team.

How is the CPSUD certification renewed?

To maintain your certification, you must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) focused on addiction medicine and substance use disorders every three years, and submit a renewal fee.

Does the exam cover harm reduction strategies?

Yes. A key domain of the exam covers the principles and practical application of harm reduction, including naloxone distribution, patient education on safer use, and support for sterile syringe services.
