CHPPC Module 11: Professional Practice & Communication Intro
PART 4: PROFESSIONAL INTEGRATION & CERTIFICATION

Module 11: Professional Practice & Communication

Welcome to the capstone module of this program. The previous modules have equipped you with extensive clinical and operational knowledge. This module is about integrating that knowledge into the human systems of the hospital to become not just a competent practitioner, but an invaluable and respected clinical leader.

From Bilingual Speaker to Master Interpreter

As an experienced community pharmacist, you are already a skilled communicator. You are fluently bilingual, able to speak “Patient-ese” with empathy and clarity, and then switch instantly to “Physician-ese” on the phone to discuss a clinical issue with precision. You are an expert at translating complex information for different audiences.

In the hospital, your role evolves from a bilingual speaker into a master interpreter at the United Nations. You will be required to communicate with multiple, distinct professional cultures—nurses, physicians, specialists, and trainees—each with their own priorities, communication styles, and urgent needs. Furthermore, you will be required to communicate in new formats, creating permanent, defensible records of your clinical judgment in the EHR and presenting your findings in a structured, formal manner during clinical rounds.

This module is designed to make you fluent in the languages and customs of inpatient practice. It will equip you with the structured communication tools and professional confidence needed to ensure your hard-earned clinical expertise is heard, respected, and effectively integrated into patient care.

What This Module Will Teach You

This module is a series of deep dives into the core communication competencies that define an effective clinical pharmacist.

Communicating with Nurses

You will learn the art of the collaborative partnership, becoming the nurse’s most trusted resource. We will cover strategies for clarifying orders, troubleshooting real-time medication alerts from barcode scanners and smart pumps, and providing fast, actionable drug information at the point of care.

Communicating with Physicians

You will master the language of clinical recommendations. We will provide a deep dive into the SBAR framework for presenting your findings, teach you how to professionally and confidently question a potentially unsafe order, and prepare you to actively participate in daily patient care rounds.

Documentation: The Art of the Clinical Note

You will learn that in the hospital, “if it wasn’t documented, it wasn’t done.” We will teach you how to write effective, concise, and defensible progress notes in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) that clearly communicate your clinical judgment and the actions you’ve taken.

Presenting a Patient Case

This is the ultimate synthesis of your clinical and communication skills. You will learn the formal, structured method for presenting a complete patient workup, from the initial chief complaint to your final therapeutic plan, preparing you for clinical rounds, case conferences, and precepting students.
