CHPPC Module 12: Code Carts & Emergency Preparedness Intro
Part 4: Professional Integration & Operational Mastery

Module 12: Code Carts & Emergency Preparedness

Welcome to one of the most high-stakes and defining areas of hospital pharmacy practice. In this module, we will translate the calm, methodical focus you apply during a chaotic retail rush into the structured, high-intensity environment of a medical emergency. Your role will evolve from the guardian of the pharmacy to an essential, hands-on member of the rapid response team. We will demystify the “code blue,” dissect the anatomy of the crash cart, and give you the knowledge and confidence to not just function, but excel, when a patient’s life is on the line.

From Routine Commander to Crisis Commander

As a veteran community pharmacist, you are the commander of your domain. You expertly manage a complex workflow, triaging tasks, directing technicians, and ensuring accuracy amidst constant interruptions. Your command is built on methodical process and foresight—anticipating the afternoon rush, preparing prescriptions in advance, and calmly solving one problem at a time.

In a hospital medical emergency, you are still a commander, but the nature of the battle changes. The environment shifts from a complex but predictable routine to a structured, high-stakes crisis. Your command is no longer over the entire workflow, but over a single, critical domain: medication delivery. You must translate your ability to think methodically into the capacity for instant, algorithm-driven action. Your focus narrows from managing dozens of patients to managing one patient’s pharmacology, moment by moment.

This module is designed to forge you into a crisis commander. It will provide the deep, practical knowledge of the tools, medications, and protocols that will allow you to perform with calm, decisive, and life-saving expertise in the most challenging moments of hospital practice.

What This Module Will Teach You

This module will systematically break down the pharmacist’s role in medical emergencies, from the equipment we manage to the clinical knowledge we must command.

Crash Cart Anatomy & Your Role in Codes

We will conduct a deep dive into the standardized crash cart, exploring its layout drawer-by-drawer. You will learn your specific, defined responsibilities as the medication expert on the code team, transforming chaos into a structured, efficient response.

Mastering ACLS/PALS Pharmacology

You will gain mastery of the core pharmacology of resuscitation. We will review the key medications from the Advanced and Pediatric Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support algorithms, focusing on doses, indications, and the critical timing of administration.

Specialized Emergency Kits & Protocols

Beyond the code cart, you will learn to manage other time-sensitive emergencies. We will dissect the contents and use of dedicated anaphylaxis kits and the pharmacist’s critical role in preparing the antidote during a Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) crisis.

Post-Code Operations and Drills

The emergency doesn’t end when the code is over. You will learn the meticulous process of post-code cart restock, controlled substance reconciliation, and the immense value of participating in mock code drills to maintain a constant state of readiness.
