Module 18: Epic (Willow Inpatient) — Order Entry & Verification
You have mastered the universal, system-agnostic principles of inpatient order verification. Now, it is time to apply that knowledge within the most prevalent Electronic Health Record in the United States. This module is your hands-on, deep-dive into the Epic ecosystem, specifically the Willow Inpatient pharmacy module. We will move beyond theory and into the practical, click-by-click reality of a hospital pharmacist’s daily workflow, translating the “what” and “why” you’ve already learned into the “where” and “how” of the Epic interface.
From Driving Theory to a Specific Dashboard
In the last module, you learned the “rules of the road” for hospital pharmacy—the universal principles of safe driving that apply no matter what vehicle you are in. You know how to interpret road signs (clinical data), obey traffic laws (safety protocols), and understand how the engine works (pharmacology).
This module puts you in the driver’s seat of a specific, high-performance vehicle: Epic. While the rules of the road are the same, the dashboard, the controls, and the navigation system are unique. We will teach you how to read Epic’s specific gauges (work queues), use its advanced GPS (order composer helpers), respond to its unique collision-avoidance warnings (BestPractice Advisories), and shift gears smoothly between verification, compounding, and dispensing.
By the end of this module, you won’t just be a licensed driver; you will be an expert operator of this specific, powerful machine, able to navigate its complexities with confidence, speed, and an unwavering focus on safety.

Work Queues & Verification Mastery
You will learn to navigate the heart of the pharmacy department: the Verification Queue. We’ll cover how to efficiently manage incoming orders, link related medications, and process complex protocol and therapy plan orders.
The Epic Order Composer
We will explore the powerful tools built into Epic’s order entry screen, including the dose calculation helpers, frequency builders, conditional “with parameters” logic, and how to properly handle PRN orders with specific indications.
Handling BestPractice Advisories (BPAs)
You will learn the critical skill of interpreting and responding to Epic’s clinical alerts. We’ll cover how to handle interruptive BPAs, correctly document your clinical overrides, and route clarification messages to providers.
Dispense & Compounding Flow
This section connects your verification work to the physical dispensing process. You’ll learn how your actions in Epic generate labels, hand off tasks to the IV workflow system, and impact the patient’s MAR and smart pump programming.
Common Epic Pitfalls
