Module 19: Meditech (Expanse) — Order Entry & Verification
Having mastered the universal principles of order verification and their specific application in the Epic ecosystem, we now broaden your expertise to another major player in the hospital landscape: Meditech Expanse. This module is designed to demonstrate the power of your foundational knowledge, proving that your core skills are not system-dependent but are instead a transferable, professional competency. We will deconstruct the Meditech interface, mapping the core concepts you’ve already mastered—queues, order composers, clinical alerts—to their new home in the Meditech environment.
Switching Operating Systems: From Windows to macOS
Learning a new EHR is not like learning a new skill; it’s like switching from a Windows PC to a Mac. All the core functions you rely on still exist. You still write documents, browse the web, and manage files. The fundamental principles of computing are identical. However, the location of the start menu, the way you close a window, and the names of the core applications are different. At first, it can feel disorienting.
Your Epic training taught you the “Windows” of the EHR world. You know exactly where to find the “Control Panel” (patient context), how to launch an “application” (Order Composer), and how to interpret its security warnings (BPAs). Meditech Expanse is the “macOS.” The icons look different, the menus are in new places, and the names have changed—but the underlying logic is the same. An “Order Set” in Meditech accomplishes the same goal as an “Order Set” in Epic. The goal of this module is to be your expert guide to this new operating system, showing you how to find the familiar tools in their new locations and adapt your workflow to a different, but equally powerful, user interface.
This module will give you the confidence to sit down at any Meditech terminal and know that, while the layout is new, your core clinical verification process remains unchanged. You will become a bilingual EHR expert, adaptable and valuable to a wider range of health systems.
What This Module Will Teach You
This module provides a guided tour of the essential Meditech Expanse workflows for the inpatient pharmacist.
Order Entry & Verification
You will learn to navigate the Meditech Order Entry (OE) and Patient Care System (PCS) views, utilize medication dictionaries, build orders with the frequency and taper tools, and confidently verify a wide range of medication types.
Protocols & Panels
We will cover the application of Meditech Order Sets and Panels, focusing on pharmacy-driven protocols like IV-to-PO conversions and renal dosing panels that streamline and standardize clinical interventions.
MAR & Administration Views
This section focuses on how your verification work translates to the electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR), and how to verify critical administration parameters that directly impact nursing workflow and patient safety.
Compounding & Labels
You will learn how Meditech handles the generation of sterile and non-sterile compounding requests, how it queues tasks for technicians, and how crucial information like Beyond-Use Dating (BUD) is captured and displayed.
Common Meditech Pitfalls
Learn to spot and prevent the most common errors specific to the Meditech workflow, such as misinterpreting unit-based defaults, understanding weight rounding logic, and responding to IV compatibility flags.
Guided Practice Set
You will apply your skills in a series of guided practice scenarios within a simulated Meditech environment, building confidence with high-risk orders like neonatal gentamicin dosing, IV-to-PO conversions, and hydromorphone PCAs.
