Interactive IV Pump Simulator
A training tool for CHPPC Module 40: Safe IV Push Practice
Practice Scenarios
Select a scenario to load the pump with a common order. Your task is to review the parameters, complete any required fields, and safely start the infusion.
Learning Guide
- Basic Use: Power on the pump, select a scenario or manual mode, click an input field to activate it, use the keypad to enter values, and press “CONFIRM”. Once programmed, press “START”.
- Potassium Chloride Scenario: The key safety check is the rate. A standard peripheral line rate limit is 10 mEq/hr. Calculate the ordered rate (20 mEq / 2 hr = 10 mEq/hr). Program the pump to deliver 100mL over 120 minutes (Rate = 50 mL/hr).
- Insulin Scenario: The pump will require you to confirm the dose (5 units/hr) and will auto-calculate the mL/hr rate based on the concentration (1 unit/mL). This is a standard safety feature.
- Nitroglycerin Scenario (Advanced): This requires a manual calculation before programming.
- Concentration: 50 mg / 250 mL = 0.2 mg/mL = 200 mcg/mL.
- Rate Calculation: (10 mcg/min * 60 min/hr) / 200 mcg/mL = 3 mL/hr.
- Your task is to manually select “Continuous” mode, enter the Rate (3 mL/hr) and a VTBI (e.g., 250 mL), and then start the infusion.
