Module 21: Vendor-Specific Lab – Epic Willow Inpatient

From Theory to Terminal: Applying Your Knowledge in a Live System.

Your Informatics Residency Begins

For the past twenty modules, we have focused on the universal, vendor-agnostic principles of pharmacy informatics. You have mastered the theories of project management, system design, clinical decision support, and governance. This foundational knowledge is the essential bedrock of your expertise. Now, it is time to translate that theory into practice.

Welcome to your “clinical rotation” in the most widely-used Electronic Health Record system in the United States. This module is a hands-on lab focused on the Epic Willow Inpatient pharmacy application. While the concepts of an order set or a clinical alert are universal, their practical implementation—the specific terminology, the build tools, the database architecture, the user interface—is unique to each vendor. Proficiency in a specific EHR is a critical, marketable skill for any working informaticist.

In this module, you will learn the “language” of Epic. We will move beyond abstract concepts to the concrete reality of Hyperspace, Chronicles, and the specific records—ERX, MED, LRC, LPP—that you will work with every day as a Willow analyst. This is your opportunity to see how all the principles you have learned come together inside a living, breathing system that is used to care for millions of patients daily.

Your Epic Willow Itinerary

This module provides a foundational understanding of the core tools and concepts needed to build, manage, and optimize the Epic Willow Inpatient pharmacy module.

Epic Architecture and Medication Build Process

Look under the hood of the Epic ecosystem. We’ll deconstruct the Chronicles database, the hierarchy of records (ERX, MED), and the step-by-step process of building a new medication from scratch.

Order Composer and Verification Workflow

Master the tools that define the medication ordering and verification process. This section covers the build for the physician’s Order Composer and the configuration of the pharmacist’s Verification queues and workflow.

Rule Logic and Best Practice Advisory Configuration

A deep dive into Epic’s clinical decision support engine. Learn how to write criteria-based rules (LRC records) and configure Best Practice Advisories (BPAs) to guide prescribers and protect patients.

Reporting Workbench & Radar Dashboards

Learn to extract and visualize the data you need. We’ll cover how to build custom reports using Reporting Workbench and how to configure Radar dashboards to give pharmacy leadership at-a-glance operational insights.

Epic Upgrade Cycle & Change Management

Understand the rhythm of maintaining a live Epic system. This section details Epic’s quarterly upgrade cycle, the process for testing new features, and how to manage the constant flow of changes and enhancements.
