Module 22: Vendor-Specific Lab – Cerner Millennium & Automation

Mastering the Intersection of EHR Logic and Pharmacy Hardware.

Becoming EHR Bilingual

Having completed your “residency” in the Epic ecosystem, it is time to expand your expertise and become bilingual in the world of electronic health records. This module serves as your clinical rotation in the second major EHR vendor in the United States: Cerner Millennium. While the clinical objectives of medication management are universal, the “language,” architecture, and toolsets used to achieve those objectives differ significantly between vendors. True informatics mastery requires the ability to navigate these different environments with equal confidence.

This module has a special focus on one of the most critical and challenging areas of pharmacy informatics: the deep integration between the core EHR and third-party pharmacy automation hardware. A significant portion of your daily work as an informaticist will involve managing the seamless flow of information from a physician’s order in the EHR to a physical medication dispensed from an automated cabinet like Pyxis or Omnicell.

Here, you will gain a practical, hands-on perspective of Cerner’s PharmNet solution and, most importantly, how it “talks” to the automation that powers modern pharmacy operations. You will learn to configure, troubleshoot, and optimize the interfaces and workflows that bridge the gap between digital orders and physical drugs, ensuring the right medication can get to the right patient safely and efficiently.

Your Cerner & Automation Itinerary

This module provides a foundational understanding of Cerner Millennium’s pharmacy solution, with a special emphasis on its integration with essential automation hardware.

Cerner Pharmacy Architecture Overview

Explore the core components of Cerner Millennium’s pharmacy solution. We’ll examine the structure of PowerChart, PharmNet, and the underlying database, understanding how clinical data flows through the system.

Pyxis/Omnicell Interface Configuration

A deep dive into the critical link between the EHR and automated dispensing cabinets. Learn how to configure and troubleshoot the HL7 interfaces that drive dispensing, crediting, and inventory management.

Dispense Verification & Labeling Workflows

Master the tools that govern the core dispensing process in PharmNet. This section covers the configuration of verification queues, pharmacist checking workflows, and the customization of medication labels.

Safety and Downtime Management Procedures

Understand Cerner’s specific tools for ensuring patient safety. We’ll explore the build for safety alerts and focus on the operational procedures for managing both planned and unplanned system downtimes.

Cross-Vendor Integration Comparisons

Synthesize your knowledge from the Epic and Cerner labs. We’ll perform a comparative analysis of how each vendor approaches common informatics challenges, from medication build to CDS configuration.
