Module 23: Vendor-Specific Lab – MEDITECH Expanse

Completing the Trifecta: From Academic Medical Centers to Community Hospitals.

Becoming EHR Trilingual

Your informatics “residency” is now entering its final rotation. Having developed a strong working knowledge of the Epic and Cerner platforms, you are now prepared to master the third major vendor in the US healthcare landscape: MEDITECH. By completing this module, you will become “trilingual” in the languages of the top EHRs, giving you a uniquely comprehensive and marketable perspective on the health IT ecosystem.

While Epic and Cerner have a dominant presence in large academic medical centers, MEDITECH has long been a powerhouse in community, rural, and critical access hospitals. Understanding its platform is essential for any informaticist who wants a complete picture of American healthcare. The clinical challenges and resource constraints in these settings are different, and the design philosophy of the EHR often reflects that reality.

This module will provide a practical deep dive into MEDITECH’s modern, web-based Expanse platform. You will learn its unique terminology, user interface, and build tools, focusing on the core functions of the pharmacy module. This rotation is about developing adaptability, proving you can apply the universal principles of informatics to any system you encounter. Completing this trifecta of vendor labs will signify your readiness to provide value in any hospital environment, regardless of the EHR it employs.

Your MEDITECH Expanse Itinerary

This module provides a foundational understanding of the core tools and concepts needed to build, manage, and optimize the pharmacy module within MEDITECH Expanse.

MEDITECH Architecture and the Pharmacy Formulary

A primer on the MEDITECH Expanse platform and its core data structures. We’ll focus on the build process for the pharmacy drug dictionary (“formulary”) and its associated management tools.

CPOE, Order Strings, and Pharmacy Order Entry

Master the unique logic of MEDITECH’s ordering process. This section deconstructs the build for physician CPOE and the powerful “order string” logic that drives pharmacy’s order entry and verification workflows.

eMAR and Bedside Verification (BCMA)

Focus on the point of administration. We’ll explore the configuration of the electronic MAR, nursing documentation workflows, and the technical setup for Barcode Medication Administration within the Expanse platform.

Clinical Surveillance and Interventions

Learn how MEDITECH supports proactive clinical pharmacy. This section covers the tools for patient monitoring, creating real-time surveillance alerts, and configuring pharmacist intervention documentation.

Standard Reports and Data Repository

Understand how to extract actionable data from MEDITECH. We will review the library of standard pharmacy reports and introduce the concepts behind using the Data Repository for more advanced analytics.
