The Director of Formulary and Drug Utilization is a pivotal leader in managed care organizations, health systems, and PBMs. This role is responsible for the clinical and financial stewardship of the pharmacy benefit. They lead the critical processes of evaluating medications for formulary placement, developing utilization management (UM) criteria, and conducting drug utilization reviews (DUR) to ensure medications are used safely, appropriately, and cost-effectively.

As a Director in this field, you are a master of clinical evidence synthesis and data analysis. You guide a team of pharmacists who create drug monographs, present clinical and economic evidence to the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee, and design programs to optimize prescribing patterns. Your work directly impacts which medications are covered for thousands or millions of members, balancing access to innovative therapies with the need to manage rising healthcare costs.

Core Responsibilities

  • Formulary Management

    Leading the P&T Committee process, including drug monograph preparation, clinical presentations, and implementation of formulary decisions.

  • Drug Utilization Review (DUR)

    Analyzing prescribing data to identify patterns of overuse, underuse, or misuse of medications and developing intervention strategies.

  • Utilization Management (UM) Development

    Creating and maintaining clinical criteria for prior authorizations, step therapies, and quantity limits for high-cost or high-risk drugs.

  • Rebate & Contract Strategy

    Providing clinical input for pharmaceutical rebate negotiations and formulary contracting strategy to maximize value.
